TVA, Facebook, RWE team up on 150-MW solar plant near Memphis, Tennessee

Germany’s RWE is joining with Facebook and the Tennessee Valley Authority to install a 150-MW solar facility near Memphis, Tennessee, to start up in 2023, which would represent an 81% increase from the state’s 185-MW current solar capacity. Facebook plans to use 110 MW of the Shelby County, Tennessee, facility’s output for its data center in Gallatin, Tennessee. Construction is to start in mid-2022, and operations should start in late 2023. RWE will own and operate the plant with a long-term power purchase agreement with the TVA. Construction is expected to cost about $140 million. “Bringing clean energy to Shelby County is part of our long-term community support plan, and is critical to support our region’s sustainability strategy,” said Doug Perry, TVA senior vice president for commercial energy solutions. “This project is more than a solar farm, it puts people to work, revitalizes communities and makes our region an environmental leader.”
