FERC rejects MISO request to delay storage rule implementation

The Federal Energy Regulatory Commission on May 17 rejected the Midcontinent Independent System Operator's request to delay implementation of the agency's landmark storage rule by nearly three years. The agency said the 15-state grid operator failed to show that prioritizing renewable energy-related market enhancements over compliance with the storage rule is necessary for reliability reasons. The May 17 denial comes after the commission previously granted a request by MISO to defer implementation of Order 841's requirements until June 6, 2022. Order 841 requires regional transmission organizations and independent system operators to lift barriers to the full participation of energy storage resources such as batteries in wholesale power markets.
