SPP average hourly real-time prices hit record levels on negative temperatures

Southwest Power Pool average hourly real-time prices spiked into the $1,300s/MWh, some of the highest levels since the Integrated Marketplace launched in 2014, as a winter storm blasted the region where weather advisories remain in place. The average locational marginal price across all settlement locations reached $1,362/MWh at 7 am CT Feb. 8 while the average marginal energy cost for the system reached $1,377/MWh, SPP spokeswoman Meghan Sever said, adding it is the second highest average hourly real-time price since the Integrated Marketplace launched in 2014. The highest remains $1,364/MWh reached at 6 am CT March 3, 2014 when the average MEC reached $1,392/MWh.
