House vote slows administration attempt to fast-track LNG by rail

A Trump administration effort to make it easier to transport LNG byrail inside specialized containers suffered a blow from theDemocratic House of Representatives this week.The House approved an amendment to a transportationappropriations bill that would deny funds to carry out an executiveorder President Trump issued April 10 to expedite the approval of LNGshipment by rail. The amendment also blocks funds for the secretaryof transportation to issue a special permit requested by EnergyTransport Solutions, a subsidiary of small-scale LNG developer NewFortress Energy, to move LNG by rail.“The Trump administration is now trying to bypass long-standingrequirements for transportation of LNG by putting it into 100-car trainsthat roll through densely-populated areas at upwards of 50 miles perhour,” Representative Peter DeFazio, Democrat-Oregon, the sponsor ofthe amendment, said in a statement.
