Government downplays resource potentialnThe government is upbeat about Cambodia’s prospects and with good reason. Economically, the situation isnbetter than it has been for 40 years – before Cambodia fell into the Vietnam war, suffered the murderous reignnof the Khmer Rouge and then lost years to civil war and economic stagnation. Money is coming into the countrynagain, both repatriated and from foreign investors, although much of it is locked into Phnom Penh and the fewnother big towns, while rural areas often remain desperately poor.
