Which is stronger, the United States' love of the automobile, or its thirst for oil? More importantly, can the two be separated? The oil and car industries have long had common interests, one after all produces the product on which the other runs. More cars means more oil, or it did. The bond of brotherhood has been eroded, not least because big oil finds its partner big car in a humbled state, dependent on public funds and no longer able to resist changes that it has opposed for years.
