That the term 'sustainability' has diffused into business terminology is testament to the powerful cultural impact of the environmental movement, but what it means to the business executive is very different to that being proposed by some environmentalists. Sustainability, it appears, is a broad church. Where once radicals came together to discuss socialism, splintering into as many different brands of Trotskyites as there are French cheeses, they now gather to discuss, and above all disagree, about environmental politics.rnJuly saw the launch in London of the Sustainability Project, a series of 12 weighty books, written by some eminent German scientists and environmentalists looking at everything from plagues to oceans to the construction of a new world order. The books have been translated into English and were presented to a packed audience at the Royal Society for the encouragement of Arts, Manufactures and Commerce. Retired corporate executive and series editor Klaus Wiegandt told the meeting that, to date, 130 of the German-language copies had been sold.
