CCS costs put at $100-$150/ton

A report from US university Harvard has put the cost of using "first-of-its-kind" technology to capture carbon dioxide at a conventional coal-fired power plant in the range of $100-$150/ton of CO2. This would add 8-12 cents/kWh to the cost of generated power. These costs could be "peak of the market" highs, the study authors said. While the study is based mostly on 2008 cost data, costs for raw materials and processed products like steel have fallen since then.rnWhen carbon capture technology has matured, the cost could plausibly be $30-$50/st of CO2, adding about 2-5 cents/kWh more to the cost of electricity, the report concluded. The Harvard John F. Kennedy School of Government report, "Realistic Costs of Carbon Capture," said estimates do not include the costs of moving or storing the captured CO2.
