Greece expands role as regional gas hub

A memorandum of understanding between Bulgarian Energy Holding, the Greek national gas company DEPA, and Italy's Edison International Holding was signed in July. The Moll progresses the development of the Greece-Bulgaria Interconnector. The 160 kilometer natural gas pipeline, which will have capacity of 3-5 Bcm a year, will give Bulgaria access to the Italy-Greece-Turkey Interconnector that carries gas from the Caspian and Russia through Turkey to Greece and has a current capacity of 3.2 Bcm/yr.rnThe MoU, which was signed by BEH CEO Galina Tosheva, DEPA board chairman Asimakis Papageorgiou, and Roberto Poti, head of international activities in Edison, envisages the creation of a joint venture company to build, own and operate the interconnector. The JV, which will be registered in Sofia, will be 50% owned by BEH and 50% by Poseidon, which is a 50-50 joint venture between DEPA and Edison. DEPA and Edison are already partners in the joint venture building and extending the ITGI pipeline. The agreement includes the creation of a commercial company between Edison, DEPA and BEH for the sale of gas at the borders of Bulgaria and neighboring countries.
