Gasoline rationing in Iran has failed to staunch the hole in the nation's finances caused by its subsidized thirst for transportation fuels and lack of refining capacity. The country imported an average 21.4 million liters/day (5.56 million gallons/day) of gasoline in the current Iranian year, which started March 20 2008, forcing the government to dip into the nation's oil savings to pay for the imports. The semi-official Fars news agency said gasoline imports rose from an average 19.5 million liters/d the previous year. Meanwhile, average imports of diesel stood at 10.2 million liters/d, according to Farid Ameri, managing director of the National Iranian Oil Products Distribution Co., compared with 7.6 million liters/d the previous year.
