China took a step further towards oil product price deregulation in October, while India halted a recent move in the same direction. Regulated domestic prices in India, China and other developing Asian nations effectively insulate consumers from rises in international crude prices, neutralising an effective demand response to higher international prices. In turn, this runs up a massive subsidy bill generally paid by government.
