Iran has started the first stage of a phased removal of fuel subsidies with cash payments to ordinary Iranians in three provinces, a potentially risky move for the government of President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad as the country braces for higher gasoline prices at the pump. "Money has been put into the accounts of 1.8 million families in the Khorasan Shomali, Khorasan Razavi and Khorasan Jonubi provinces," said Organization of Targeted Subsidies Managing Director Behrouz Moradi on state television.
