US utilities predict decline in electricity usage to 2025

A collection of investor-owned utilities are projecting a decline in electricity usage in the US from 2010 to 2025, as building codes and appliance efficiency standards take effect. Utility efficiency programs are also expected to gain more traction in the market, but account for a smaller chunk of the reduced usage, according to IEE, an investor-owned utility group that focuses on efficiency and innovation. Total electricity usage in the US is expected to dip to 3,590 TWh in 2025 from 3,730 TWh in 2010 under lEE's moderate case. Funded by the Edison Foundation and affiliated with the Edison Electric Institute, IEE members represent about 70% of the industry.
