Residential electricity consumption declined for the third consecutive year and hit its lowest level in more than a decade, according to the U.S. Energy Information Administration. The average annual electric consumption for a household was 10,819 kilowatt hours in 2013. The last time power usage was near such levels was in 2001 when average consumption was 10,535 kilowatt-hours. Despite the explosion since then of power-sucking smart phones, tablets, and other small electronics, electric usage has stayed in check thanks to the construction of energy-efficient homes and the availability of major appliances that operate with less power such as refrigerators, air conditioners, and LED televisions.
