South Korea faces "unprecedented electricity shortages" this summer, potentially driving up LNG demand, after two more nuclear power units in the country were forced to shut as a result of the false certification scandal, the country's energy ministry said in May. With the shutdown of the two reactors, 10 of the country's 23 nuclear power reactors are currently offline because of the scandal over faked certificates for parts, or due to malfunctions, maintenance or other reasons. The country's Nuclear Safety and Security Commission said it halted the operation of two reactors - Shin (New) Kori-2 reactor on the south coast and Shin Wolsong-1 on the east coast - as its inspectors discovered that the reactors used components for which safety certificates had been fabricated. The two reactors have a capacity of 1,000 MW each.
