Firms talk up Brazilian oil and gas prospects

Brazil could have as much as 1,100 Tcf of unconventional gas reserves and an offshore basin that could be "the next big one," speakers at the Latin Upstream conference in Rio de Janeiro said in May. Marco Tavares from consultancy Gas Energy used a combination of estimates from Brazil's National Petroleum Agency (ANP) and market sources to suggest a potential reserves figure of 1,108 Tcf of gas. Tavares noted that in September 2012, the ANP said Brazil could have 226 Tcf in reserves in three basins: Parnaiba, Parecis and Reconcavo. He said that according to market estimates in areas the ANP is yet to survey or is still surveying, there could be another 800 Tcf.
