The surprise arrest of Russian billionaire Vladimir Yevtushenkov, the majority owner of Russia's fifth largest oil producer Bashneft, has sparked concerns that his detention may be politically motivated. Investigators placed Yevtushenkov, the chairman of the Sistema holding conglomerate, under house arrest in September, on the basis that Bashneft owned oil assets that may have been illegally privatized in the Russian Republic of Bashkortostan in the early 2000s.
