Swiss hydro warnings escalate

The Swiss Electricity Commission (Elcom) has joined the Association of Swiss Electricity Utilities (VSE) and leading Swiss utilities (Axpo, Alpiq and BKW) in the battle to preserve Swiss hydropower. Switzerland faces a future as a net importer of electricity, putting enormous pressure on its grid and leaving once-wealthy utilities strapped for cash, Axpo President Robert Lombardini said in a statement to the Suedostschweiz newspaper June 12. The “situation is alarming . . . we no longer earn any money from hydropower in the summer.”
