Turkmenistan: the pursuit of new markets

The presidents of Turkmenistan and Afghanistan,accompanied by the prime minister of Pakistan and theexternal affairs minister of India, witnessed February 23 twoceremonies to mark progress in developing the $10 billion,33 Bcm a year Turkmenistan-Afghanistan-Pakistan-India(TAPI) gas pipeline.The first was held at Salem Chashma in Turkmenistan, markingthe actual construction of most, if not all, of the line’s214-kilometer Turkmen section. The second, at Herat in westernAfghanistan, was a groundbreaking ceremony to record theofficial start of work on the line’s 816-km Afghan section.
