Lago Bianco progresses

The commune of Poschiavo has voted in favour of the CHF 1.5 (€1.123) billion Repower Lago Bianco project for a 1,000 MW pumped storage dam in the Bernina Pass. The project would enrich the inhabitants of the valley with CHF 8 million a year for the next 80 years plus a CHF 5.1 million concession fee. The project, controversial for ecological reasons and because it will require the sacrifice of agricultural land, is expected to move quickly ahead in preparation for planning permission, which if granted would launch a six-year construction process. Two thirds of surplus electricity in off-peak hours would be used to pump water up from Poschiavo to Lago Bianco.
