SSE, Shell in CCS deal

Utility SSE and oil producer Shell have agreed to jointly develop a carbon capture and storage project at SSE's 1,760 MW Peterhead gas-fired power station in Aberdeenshire, Scotland, SSE said November 9. The aim is to design and develop a full chain facility that can capture CO2 post combustion from one 385-MW CCGT unit at the plant, before transporting the CO2 for storage in Shell's North Sea Goldeneye gas field. As far as possible the CO2 would be transported using existing infrastructure. SSE said the agreement would allow it to speed up pre-FEED studies, hopefully leading to a full Front-End Engineering Design study in the second half of 2012, if progress is made with securing funding from the European Union's NER-300 program.
