Veteran Datteln units reprieved

E.ON has won a reprieve on the closure of three old coal-fired units at its Datteln power station, the environment ministry in the state of Nordrhein-Westfalen announced November 2. In question are two 95-MW units commissioned in 1964 and one 113-MW unit commissioned in 1969. All three were due to close by the end of this year.To ensure that power supplies to German railway company Deutsche Bahn are not endangered, the units will now be subject to an "extended closure order" allowing them to continue to produce 16.7 Hz electricity for the railways as well as heat for the local district heating network.
