Spain's new Popular Party government has wasted no time in taking anti-crisis measures in the energy sector, including a freeze on tariffs that looks set to perpetuate the country's chronic debt owed to its electricity utilities. The sector received some good news too. The Garofia nuclear power station will not be closed on completing 40 years of operation in 2013, as ordered by the outgoing socialist government, and years of delay over where to locate a national nuclear waste dump have ended with a December decision to create the storage area in a village in Cuenca province, east of Madrid.
