Booming German wind deflates spot power

German spot power prices in week 8 dropped to the lowestrnworking day levels seen since last September amid recordrnwind power output, rising above 37 GW for the first timernever February 22. Total wind output exceeded 800 GWh thatrnday, more than Spain’s total power demand, with weeklyrnwind output expected to reach 4 TWh for the first time everrnin Germany. Meanwhile solar production levels are startingrnto pick up. Combined wind and solar output rose for thernfifth week in a row to February 24, admittedly from a lowrnbase, the combined figure having failed to reach 1 TWh inrnweek 3 for the first time since mid-2015. At the same timernmilder weather has reduced demand across the region,rneffectively removing all tension from the markets. As arnresult, German spot prices dipped below €25/MWh midweekrncompared to the €50/MWh-plus average in January,rnwhen day-ahead prices spiked above €100/MWh on thernspot exchange for the first time since 2008.
