Russia's Ministry of Natural Resources said September 20 preliminary analysis of earth samples collected by a Russian expedition to the North Pole earlier this year confirmed Russia's claim on the supposedly resource-rich Arctic. The geological data confirms the opinion of Russian scientists that the Lomonosov Ridge and Mendeleyev Rise are part of its East Siberian continental shelf, the ministry said. If the relevant UN body agrees, Russia could have a legal claim to the area.
