Poland's largest oil and natural gas producer, PGNiG, said November 19 it had signed an agreement with a consortium of international companies to expand the country's largest underground gas storage facility in Wierzchowice in southwestern Poland. In October, a consortium consisting of Poland's PBG, Italy's Technimont, France's Sofregaz and the Czech Republic's Plynostav Pardubice Holding, won a tender to expand Wierzchowice, near Milicz, Lower Silesia, from its current capacity of 0.575 billion cubic metres to 1.2 Bcm. The contract is worth an estimated Zloty 1.33 billion ($443 million) and is expected to be completed in November 2011, PGNiG said in a statement. PGNiG operates six underground storage facilities with a total capacity of 1.66 Bcm, equivalent to 13.5% of the annual consumption of PGNiG's customers. PGNiG wants to increase its total storage capacity to 2.8 Bcm by 2012.
