CEZ, the Czech Republic's power giant, is to develop Europe's largest onshore wind farm, following the conclusion August 26 of negotiations with Continental Wind Partners for the acquisition of the rights to two adjoining projects in eastern Romania with a combined capacity of 600 MW. The Fantanele and Cogealac wind farms will be approximately double the size of the next largest fully permitted onshore wind farm in Europe, and triple the size of the largest current operational wind farm in Europe. CEZ said that the project will require investment of E∪D1.1 billion ($1.6 billion) including the acquisition price and capital expenditure, and would be completed in 2010. Fantanele and Cogealac are situated in the eastern province of Dobrogea, north of the Black Sea port of Constanta. CEZ said that the project would be developed in stages with 347.5 MW to be developed in a first phase for commissioning by the end of 2009 and the remaining 252.5 MW to be commissioned in a second stage by the end of 2010.
