Cernavoda helps cut power imports

Romania managed to cut its electricity imports by nearly 30% year-on-year in the first half of 2008, following the commissioning of the country's second nuclear reactor, Cernavoda 2, in October 2007.rnImports up to the end of June totalled 395.5 GWh, down 169.3 GWh on the same period last year, according to figures published by the Romanian National Institute of Statistics in mid-August. Nuclear output for the first six months rose by over 66% compared to HI 2007 to 5.119 TWh, while production at its hydro plants also rose by 28%. Increased nuclear and hydropower production meant that Romania was able to cut its fossil fuel generation by about 1% in the period but the country, remains heavily dependent on fossil fuels for power generation, which accounted for over 54.3% of its electricity.
