Electrabel, Elnord sign long-term trading contract

Electrabel Polska, the Polish subsidiary of the Belgian-based power company, and Elnord, the trading arm of Energa, one of Poland's four state-owned vertically-integrated power companies, have agreed an electricity trading contract for the years 2009-2012. The contract announced June 17 is understood to be the first fully commercial contract between two non-state-owned companies for long-term power deliveries. Under the contract signed earlier this month, Electrabel Polska will supply power to Gdansk-based Elnord most probably from a combination of its own production at its hard coal/biomass-fired thermal power plant Polaniec and from the market. "These longer term commitments are not typical for the Polish wholesale market yet, but in the opinion of the chief executives of both companies these types of contracts will become everyday practice in the short time," Electrabel Polska and Elnord said in a statement.rnPiotr Rogoz, head of market operations and sales support at Electrabel Polska, told Platts, June 17, that the company hoped the transaction would contribute to the development of a forward wholesale market in Poland. "So far trading is limited to the front-year; there is no mid-term market in Poland," he said. "We hope that in the very near future that this will contribute to the forward wholesale market in Poland. We hope to initiate further such deals on the market. Our aim is to build liquidity and transparency on the Polish wholesale market. This is a substantial step forward in achieving this objective," he said.
