Helsinki utility Helen said on June 22 it plans to shut its coal-firedHanasaari B combined heat and power plant (CHP) by April 1, 2023.The 220 MWe/430 MWth unit, commissioned in the 1970s, had beenexpected to operate until late 2024.Early closure would reduce the Finnish capital’s emissions by about20%, Helsinki mayor Jan Vapaavuori said.Under the new plans, Hanasaari is to be put into reserve for heatingseason 2022–23, when the new biomass-fired 260 MW Vuosaari plantis to start operating.
