BP and Danish renewables giant Orsted plan to jointly develop anindustrial-scale, renewable hydrogen unit at Germany’s Lingen refineryable meet a fifth of the plant’s hydrogen needs, the companies saidNov. 10.The project, expected to be operational in 2024, will comprise a 50MW electrolyzer installed at BP’s 96,000 b/d Lingen refinery innorthwest Germany powered by an Orsted-operated offshore windfarm in the North Sea.The electrolyzer will be capable of generating 9,000 mt/year ofhydrogen, or 20% of the refinery’s current hydrogen consumption,which is currently sourced from reforming natural gas, often referredto as “grey” hydrogen.
