Re-wetting peat bogs in England, Northern Ireland and Scotland can be used as a carbon sink that could trap at least 5% of the UK’s emissions, Oliver Forster said in an interview Aug. 27. “Peat, worldwide, is 3% of the world’s land area but 30% of the world’s soil carbon. So it is a bit like rainforest in terms of a carbon resource or a super absorber that we need to protect and restore,” Forster said. “The UK has a very big peat resource and I think we can lead the way in some of these peatland restoration measures. We have a dedicated natural climate solutions department and lots of the focus has been on UK-based initiatives.”
