Vattenfall gives green light to 1.5 GW Dutch offshore wind farm

Vattenfall has taken a final investment decision on the 1.5 GW Hollandse Kust Zuid 1-4 offshore wind farm in the Netherlands, the Swedish state-owned utility said June 4. Vattenfall was awarded permits for Hollandse Kust Zuid 1-2 and 3-4 after winning two subsidy-free auctions in 2018 and 2019. It has combined the two awards to form one wind farm to optimize development. When operational in 2023 Hollandse Kust Zuid will be the largest offshore wind farm in the world, surpassing Orsted's 1.2 GW Hornsea One wind farm in UK waters and producing around 6 TWh/year. Construction is to start in 2021 with Siemens Gamesa contracted to supply 140 turbines of 11 MW each, the first time that size of machine has been deployed offshore. Other contracted suppliers providing foundations, inter-array cabling and turbine installation services include Sif Group, TKF, Prysmian, Subsea 7 and Swire Blue Ocean, Vattenfall said.
