New Jersey opens door to offshore wind; solicits proposals for 350-MW project

Almost three years after declaring a moratorium on offshore wind, New Jersey is opening the door to the technology, seeking proposals for a 350-MW "pilot" project it would monitor. The state will provide up to $19 million for the wind farm, which would deliver power to the system of Atlantic City Electric.rnNew Jersey imposed the moratorium in early 2005 after several developers proposed projects, drawing protests from some environmentalists and beach towns that rely on tourism (EUW, 3 Jan '05, 2). The Board of Public Utilities later said it would allow a pilot and it released a solicitation on October 5.rnDevelopers must submit proposals by January 16, 2008 to an evaluation committee that will include officials from several state agencies. The BPU will issue a decision in March.
