BC Hydro, British Columbia to slash energy use in 6,500 government buildings

BC Hydro and the British Columbia government have launched an ambitious plan to slash power use in 6,500 government and public buildings with a target to conserve 2,100 GWh within 12 years.The government intends to infuse C$200 million (US$203.3 million) into the program. But some C$250 million on power costs would be saved, estimates Bob Elton, president and CEO of Vancouver-based BC Hydro.The plan is the latest step in the BC government's goal to conserve power and to achieve energy self-sufficiency by 2016. The utility estimates that by 2020 the program would result in net savings of 342 GWh of power annually, enough to power 34,200 households. The cumulative amount of energy saved would reach 2,100 GWh.
