KCP & L agrees to cut CO2 emissions 20%; plan marks another Sierra Club power move

In another action that illustrates the growing role environmental groups appear to be carving out in power industry decisions, Kansas City Power & Light last week agreed to cut its carbon dioxide emissions by 20% by 2020 as part of a pact with the Sierra Club. KCP & L owns 2,342 MW of coal-fired generation. The agreement does not explain how the Great Plains Energy subsidiary will make the cuts. Instead, it focuses on steps the utility will take to offset CO2 emissions from its 850-MW Iatan II project that is under construction near Weston, Missouri.
