DOE offers $8 billion in loan guarantees to support carbon capture, coal gasification

The Department of Energy invited private industry last week to apply for up to $8 billion in federally funded loan guarantees to help advance a range of technologies, including carbon capture and storage, to burn coal more cleanly. DOE will put forward $6 billion in loan guarantees to help develop and advance CCS commercially with no less than 50% carbon capture rates. It will put $2 billion toward advanced coal gasification projects to produce synthetic gas that will primarily produce power and hydrogen. The department deadline for initial applications will be December 22. This phase of the loan guarantees process builds on a program created in the Energy Policy Act of 2005. Including this round of fossil energy projects, the entire program is valued at $42.5 billion.
