Manitoba Power to sell surplus hydro to Minnesota Power, may build hydro plants

Manitoba Hydro has agreed to sell Minnesota Power surplus hydropower starting immediately. Separately, it plans to build either one or two hydro plants on the Nelson River and sell 250 MW of the output to the Minnesota utility from 2020 through 2035. The amount of surplus power for sale from Manitoba's 5,000 MW of existing hydro generation would vary depending on the amount of surplus available at a given time, said Glenn Schneider, spokesman for the Winnipeg-based Manitoba Hydro. The surplus price was not disclosed and regulatory approval is not needed.
