Entergy, Mississippi Power dispute critics' claim that transparent IRP process needed

Entergy Mississippi and Mississippi Power last week defended the approach each takes in planning for electricity needs, as critics stepped up pressure on state regulators to use a formal, transparent integrated resource planning process. During four days of hearings at the Mississippi Public Service Commission, representatives of Entergy Mississippi and Mississippi Power said utilities are doing what they can to encourage energy efficiency, and are securing the capacity from the most cost-effective reliable sources. Entergy Mississippi owns 3,372 MW of generating capacity, and has access to power from other Entergy subsidiaries and from merchant power plants. Its peak demand is about 3,300 MW. Mississippi Power, a Southern Company unit, owns 3,166 MW and its peak demand is about 2,600 MW.
