AEP, Duke join to build $1 billion Indiana line, Duke's first foray into the 765-kV line arena

American Electric Power and Duke Energy have formed a joint venture to build and own high-voltage transmission assets in Indiana that are expected to cost about $1 billion. Through a 50-50 partnership called Pioneer Transmission, AEP and Duke plan to build 240 miles of 765-kV lines and related facilities in Indiana to link Duke's Greentown plant near Kokomo with AEP's Rockport plant near Evansville. The final cost of the project will depend on routing of the line, equipment and commodity costs, AEP said, adding that it 1. is working with PJM Interconnection and the Midwest Independent Transmission System Operator to determine the optimal configuration of facilities. An extensive public outreach effort is planned for 2009 and 2010 before the final path of the line is selected, Duke said.
