The North American Electric Reliability Corp. has approved a standard that deals with transmission relays that had been a topic of debate since the August 14, 2003, blackout that left 50 million people without power in parts of Canada and the US. The standard addresses settings for protective relays on the transmission grid, which are designed to trip, or cut off power, when voltage drops below a certain level or there are major voltage changes.
