Nevada could top California as leader in geothermal capacity in next decade

Nevada may surpass California as the leader in geothermal ncapacity in a decade or so, partly because of the Golden State’s nregulatory hurdles, according to the head of the Geothermal nEnergy Association.nCalifornia has the most geothermal capacity in the US — nand the world — with 2,566 MW, followed by Nevada with 433 nMW. Nevada, however, has more geothermal projects in devel-nopment — up to 3,686 MW — compared with California with nup to 1,998 MW, according to GEA. n“It’s quite possible Nevada could exceed California in ten nyears,” Karl Gawell, GEA executive director, said last week. nCalifornia has excellent geothermal resources, but it is hard nto get permits for projects in the state and regulators are moving nslowly to address transmission shortfalls, Gawell added.
