The new century of the metropolis: urban enclaves and orientalism

Tom Angotti's The New Century of the Metropolis is an ambitious examination of urbanization around the world. In the preface of the book, he notes that this project began as a follow up to Metropolis 2000. In his earlier work, Angotti laid out the economic and social challenges of an increasingly urbanized world. Correspondingly, this book is global in its approach to urban inequality. Angotti takes us to India, Israel, the former USSR, China, the USA, and Latin America. Respectively, he examines dependent urbanization, the legacy of Soviet planning, invisibility/segregation, and market-driven enclave urbanism, as well as sustainable alternatives.
