The past quarter-century or so has seen a remarkable transformation of the challenges faced by US cities and by people with scholarly and professional interests in urbanism. From the mid-1960s to the early 1990s, numerous municipalities had to confront ethno-racial tensions, fiscal emergencies, population loss, and steadily rising crime. In more recent decades, some of these conditions have improved, while others have been succeeded by a new set of problems that pose a very different kind of threat to city life. It is in the context of this new period in American urbanism that the authors of Naked City and Culture Works write.
