China builds a national gas pipeline grid

CHINA is building a national gas-transmission pipeline grid to develop domestic gas resources and introduce imported LNG to reduce the use of polluting fuels, particularly coal, in cities across the country. Construction of gas-transmission pipeline schemes is underway in various provinces, while more are being planned to expand gas supplies in many areas, particularly the east coast where a chain of LNG import terminals is planned. According to China National Petroleum Corporation (CNPC), the nation's largest natural gas-transmission company which, together with its subsidiary Petrochina, operates over 18,500km of China's 22,000-km gas-transmission network, construction of the nationwide gas pipeline system will take another 20 years to be completed. By then consumption of natural gas will have grown at least fourfold to become on of the most important energy sources in most Chinese cities.
