China moves ahead with construction of national gas pipeline grid

CHINA’S PLANS to achieve long term energy supply security recently took an important step forward withnthe official opening in December of the Trans-Asian Gas Pipeline built to transport gas from Turkmenistannto China which crosses Uzbekistan and Kazakhstan along its 1,830km route. China will import 40 billionncubic metres (bcm) a year of gas from Turkmenistan under a new contract signed by China National PetroleumnCorporation (CNPC) and state-run Turkmengaz in June 2009 replacing the original sales contract for 30 bcmna year signed in 2007.
