Odds have trampolined upwards Congress will pass a pipeline safely bill before adjourning in October. The likelihood brightened when Sen. John McCain (R-AZ) introduced his own pipeline safety bill in April. A spokeswoman for McCain, who chairs the Commerce Committee, which is the committee of jurisdiction, says the former presidential candidate "wants to be active on this issue.'' Sen. Patty Murray (D-WA), who has been leading the political parade for a pipeline bill, jumped onto the McCain bill as a co-sponsor. Her bill was a reaction to the Olympic petroleum pipeline spill in Bellingham, WA last summer which killed three people. Her sister is a teacher in the area of the spill. "Since I introduced my pipeline safety bill on Jan. 26, 20 different states have suffered major new pipeline spills," Murray says. "These spills cause severe environmental damage and put our children and communities at risk. We have no time to waste, and I am extremely pleased Senator McCain has joined our cause."
