While BP's problems with corrosion in its Alaskan oil pipeline have prompted the Pipeline and Hazardous Materials Safety Administration (PHMSA) to issue a proposed rule on low-stress hazardous pipelines, the rule won't affect gas transmission lines. There are no low-stress interstate gas pipelines, although there are low-stress distribution lines (which may be affected by the upcoming integrity management rule for intrastates). Oil pipelines are the main target of the new low-stress rule.
