With the nation's natural gas transmission industry fac-ing a difficult challenge in maintaining an adequate technical workforce today and throughout the next decade, the Interstate Natural Gas Association of America (INGAA) contracted with Interliance Consulting Inc. to conduct a risk analysis study and provide specific workforce strategies to consider and actions to take. The analysis is based on data gathered from executives, managers and operations and human resource professionals within the natural gas transmission industry and secondary data sources.rnBrad Kamph, president of Interliance Consulting Inc., whose company prepared the INGAA study, Securing Our Future: Developing the Next Workforce -An Analysis of Risk and Recommended Strategies For the Natural Gas Pipeline Industry, recently responded to questions posed by P&GJ on ways to manage challenging workforce issues in the natural gas transmission industry.rnHere's what he had to say:rnP&GJ: What's needed for the nation's gas transmission industry to adequately managing its workforce and knowledge assets?rnKamph: On a company level communications between top management and front-line managers about the state of the workforce, resources required, and the level of planning to-date will greatly help the solution. One of the biggest challenges that we continually see is that companies do not have an adequate business case, or any business case at all, to truly change the pattern. Once a plan with a real return-on-investment is put in place, it is much easier to get the support and get some real momentum within the company.
