摘要

The term uncertainty has been used in research and development laboratories for ages but now it is being used meaningfully in oil and gas industries. A statement of measurement uncertainty is crucial in evaluating the fitness for purpose of a measured parameter value. The various terms have been used interchangeably in the industry to represent quality and quantity of measurement though each term has a specific meaning. Accuracy represents the closeness between a measurement and the true or correct value. Accuracy cannot be discussed meaningfully unless the true value is known. As the true value of a measurement can never be known in the practical industry, accuracy can never be defined in quantitative terms. Accuracy in qualitative terms of measurement can be termed as highly accurate, low accuracy but cannot be as +/- 0.5% accurate. Precision represents the repeatability of measurement. It does not require correct or true value to be known. The device which has better repeatability is preferred as it can be adjusted to a reference value as is done in the case of liquid flow meter proving.
